Combating Loneliness on Solo Business Trips: A Guide for Modern Travelers

Solo Business Trips.jpg

While technology has revolutionized business travel, research suggests it hasn't addressed one key concern: loneliness.

Statistics show that a significant portion of solo travellers (45%) experience this feeling, particularly during evenings spent dining or socializing at hostels or hotels.

The Challenge of Loneliness

Women seem to be disproportionately affected, with 61% feeling uncomfortable drinking alone at bars and 34% disliking solo dining, thinking they are being watched or singled out.

On your first solo trip taking along a solo travel buddy is the smart option which allows you to get the hang of how independent travel works for you and whether you enjoy the experience.

Combating Loneliness on the Road

As a solo traveller there is no need to let loneliness dampen your trips!

We have previously added an article in this forum regarding loneliness and anxiety while travelling alone and here are some further tips to create a more fulfilling experience:
  • Embrace the Restaurant Wait: While eating out, strike up a conversation with others waiting for a table, or at hostels while preparing meals chat with other travellers doing the same. If they are also solo travellers, they might be happy to share a table, creating a more enjoyable evening. The same applies when preparing your own meals as above
  • Leverage Forums or SM Networks: Check on forums like this one or on social media to see if you can meet up with a local traveller at your destination, or someone staying at the same accommodations you are at the current times.
  • People-Watch in Comfort: For dining at restaurants or hotel dining rooms, choose a table near a window. Even if you're dining alone, you can enjoy the outside activity for your own entertainment.
  • Feel the Ambient Atmosphere: For eating out choose an earlier dinner, or prepare your meals early at social accommodations. Restaurants often have a more relaxed and casual atmosphere at earlier times, which might feel less isolating when alone. Most travellers like to prepare their meals early too, so you will definitely find a fellow traveller to talk to
  • Expand Your Network Online: Before you travel, join local solo travel forums and SM groups online. You can then connect with people virtually while on your trips, and potentially meet them in person if they are at your destination at the time. When planning any meetups always do so in a public setting.
  • Explore Local Events and Activities: Check local event calendars to find activities like sightseeing, or guided tour groups that align with your interests. Participating in these events can be a great way to meet people and experience the local culture.
  • Embrace the Solo Experience: While it's important to connect with others, don't be afraid to enjoy your own company. Take some time for self-reflection, explore local attractions at your own pace, or indulge in a relaxing activity like reading or meditation.
The Human Touch in a Tech-Driven World

Technology is a powerful tool for planning and managing business travel.

However, for fostering human connection and combating loneliness, a focus on traditional methods like conversation, networking, and creating social opportunities remains crucial. So, put down your phone, smile, and embrace the chance to connect with others during your next solo business trip.
